So, as it stands I have now been living in Firenze for the grand total of....10 days. To be honest, it feels like I have been here way longer than that. Its been, for the most part, awesome so far...
Frustrations have arisen from a few things. For one, my room. I have reverted back into a dorm, essentially, this is like freshman year of college, with even less space. I am really unable to cook anything that requires an oven, as we only have two burners available to us that everyone in the entire hostel shares. I so badly want to try to cook good things and experiment while im here with that, but its so difficult. Today we went to Mercado Central, and it was An Experience. First, (i wish i had taken pictures, but alex took some nice ones so hopefully i will steal hers.) there are so many butchers there! So much meat...and its like whole heads of pigs, or lots and lots of sheep stomach and tripe, or a swordfish's head, or chicken bodies with everything still there BUT the head. And everything is weighed in Kilos, so figuring out lbs to kilos while trying to remember how to say eggplant in italian made for a bit of a challenge. but we did it. I got fresh veggies, and some spices and eggs, and their eggs are apparently amazing and delicious, and managed to speak some italian and get my point across. Its weird how your brain understands things when it absolutely needs to. but anyway, there were so many other things i wanted to buy or try, that i would have no way of cooking, and it was disappointing.
Another thing about my room, is that i recently discovered that my mattress is actually not a mattress at all, but is more of a gym matt. Yes, a somewhat hard, thick piece of foam covered in red plastic. mm.
The last, and probably most frustrating thing, is that the internet blows huge monkey balls. Apparently, Italy decided that to prevent terriorist from doing, I dont know what, anyone who uses internet at a hotel, hostel, school...anywhere public I guess, needs to have access codes, and to log in after showing a passport. fine. but whats RETARDED is that they give you time codes that can only be used once, and since we are living here, we need more time that those who are only here for a day or two. Except the "unlimited" codes they give us are in actuality, limited, since when their router kicks us off, the code no longer works and we need new ones. And since only like half of the people working behind the desk think its okay to give out longer than an hour time code, I have been once again stuck with the hour long at a time sessions. and its really irritating when youre trying to download anything or talk to someone. or post an entry such as this.
I mean...it could be worse. I could be living in an apartment infested with blood sucking bugs like emily's friend is. Or I could have no internet atall like emily's other friends.
Or I could be living with a psycho bitch who thinks everyone is out to get her...wait....
anyway. The very plus side is that Firenze is beautiful. The people are beautiful, the buildings are beautiful, the food...you get the point. It constantly blows my mind that people LIVE here, in these houses and buildings that i am so fascinated with and take so many pictures of. This fact especially hit me when we went on a day trip adventure to Perugia, a city 2 hours north of Firenze. It was a crazy city, built into a huge hill with TINY winding streets that only a local would really understand how to navigate. If i was 16 and learning to drive, I would probably cry. But the buildings! they were amazing! and then to see people walking out of them with their trash or whatever just blew my mind.
Today was the Shopping Experience day. We went to the San Lorenzo market also, and I bought myself a new Big Girl purse AND a Big Girl Wallet. and a leather bracelet. and i love them. They smell like the Mediterranean sea and are so soft and pretty to look at. That was also an Experience, haggling with the Italian men while also being flirted with and convinced that you are getting a great deal. But i did it! I bargained along, and got some pretty good deals i believe. psh. If i had the extra 100$, i woulda bought a leather coat. They were beautiful, and soft and so amazing. (mom...you need to come visit)
so now, Im very bored, which is why this is so long and boring probably. Im kind of missing Geneseo, which i NEVER thought i would utter while in Italy, but, there it is. If i was feeling productive i would write my two press releases for my internship app. but my brain seems to have turned to mush, and I'll need to do that tomorrow. seriously.
ciao.
